Classic cars are damaged more often by storage than by driving. Moisture, flat-spotted tires, dead fuel and dust do their work silently over a winter or a multi-year restoration pause. Here is the checklist we give collectors.
Before the car goes to sleep
- Wash and fully dry it. Dirt trapped under a cover becomes an abrasive; moisture becomes corrosion.
- Change the oil. Used oil holds acids that etch bearings over months.
- Fill the tank and stabilize the fuel to prevent condensation and varnish.
- Over-inflate tires slightly or set the car on stands to prevent flat spots.
- Battery on a tender, or disconnected entirely.
- Block the tailpipe and intake with steel wool to keep rodents out.
Control the environment
