How to Store a Classic Car Long-Term (Without Ruining It)

Classic cars are damaged more often by storage than by driving. Moisture, flat-spotted tires, dead fuel and dust do their work silently over a winter or a multi-year restoration pause. Here is the checklist we give collectors.

Before the car goes to sleep

  • Wash and fully dry it. Dirt trapped under a cover becomes an abrasive; moisture becomes corrosion.
  • Change the oil. Used oil holds acids that etch bearings over months.
  • Fill the tank and stabilize the fuel to prevent condensation and varnish.
  • Over-inflate tires slightly or set the car on stands to prevent flat spots.
  • Battery on a tender, or disconnected entirely.
  • Block the tailpipe and intake with steel wool to keep rodents out.

Control the environment

The ideal is a dry garage with stable temperature. Concrete floors wick moisture, so a vapor barrier under the car helps in damp climates. Avoid plastic tarps at all costs; they trap condensation against the body. Our guide to why tarps damage cars explains the mechanism.

The right cover for long-term indoor storage

Indoors you want soft, breathable and snug. The Black Satin stretch cover is the collector favorite: silky against paint, dust-tight, and cut to your exact model. For museum-grade isolation, the indoor inflatable bubble seals the whole car in filtered, circulating air, ending moisture and rodent worries in one move. Both are on the grade comparison page.

While it sleeps

Check monthly: tire pressures, tender status, any signs of pests, and lift the cover to let the car breathe on a dry day. If the car lives outside part of the year, step up to a Gold Shield 5L and read storing your car in winter.
