Best Ford Mustang Car Covers: Every Generation and Variant

No car has been made in more variations for longer than the Mustang. Sixty-plus model years, seven generations, and a list of special editions long enough that we pattern fifteen separate Mustang variants. That is the practical challenge with a Ford Mustang car cover: a 1967 fastback, a Fox-body hatchback, a GT500 with a tall wing and a Mach-E crossover are four completely different shapes wearing the same badge.

This guide covers each generation, each special variant we pattern separately, which protection grade suits your storage, and the mistakes that mark Mustang paint. Every section links to covers built for those exact model years.

Why Mustangs Need a Cover

Long hoods, from 1964 to today

The long-hood short-deck proportion is the Mustang's signature and it has never changed. That hood is the panel taking the most direct UV and collecting the most sap and droppings, and it is where clear-coat haze shows first.

Fastback rear glass

From the 1965 fastback through the modern coupe, Mustangs carry a large sloped rear window. Water sheets down it onto the rear deck and pools, and on older cars the lower glass seal is a common leak point once it ages.

Classics with irreplaceable paint

Original first-generation paint cannot be recreated exactly. For a numbers-matching car an indoor cover is preserving originality, not just gloss.

Convertibles need extra care

Mustang convertibles have been offered in almost every generation. Always raise and latch the top before covering, and make sure the fabric roof is dry. Anything trapped against a soft top invites mildew.

Mustang Covers by Generation

First generation (1964 to 1973)

Ten model years covering the original notchback, fastback and convertible through the larger 1971 to 1973 cars. The 1964 half, 1965 and 1966 cars are the most collected, and the 1967 to 1968 fastbacks the most recognizable. Body styles here include the fastback, which is patterned separately from the coupe because the roofline is completely different.

Shop by year: 1964 · 1965 · 1966 · 1967 · 1968 · 1969 · 1970 · 1971 · 1972 · 1973

Second generation, Mustang II (1974 to 1978)

Smaller, Pinto-based, and built for the fuel crisis. Long dismissed and now quietly appreciating. A simple shape to cover, and survivors are usually garaged.

Shop by year: 1974 · 1975 · 1976 · 1977 · 1978

Third generation, Fox body (1979 to 1993)

Fifteen model years, the longest-running Mustang body, and the one with the biggest enthusiast following. Hatchback, coupe and convertible. Fox bodies are frequently driven and parked outside rather than kept indoors, which makes this the generation most likely to need genuine outdoor capability.

Shop by year: 1979 · 1980 · 1981 · 1982 · 1983 · 1984 · 1985 · 1986 · 1987 · 1988 · 1989 · 1990 · 1991 · 1992 · 1993

Fourth generation, SN95 and New Edge (1994 to 2004)

The rounded SN95 through the sharper New Edge restyle in 1999. Plenty of affordable examples living outdoors, so Gold Shield 5L or Supreme Shield HD is the sensible pick. Convertibles are common in this generation, so mind the top before covering.

Shop by year: 1994 · 1995 · 1996 · 1997 · 1998 · 1999 · 2000 · 2001 · 2002 · 2003 · 2004

Fifth generation, S197 (2005 to 2014)

The retro revival that brought back the 1960s fastback silhouette. Large flat hood, big rear deck, and on GT and Shelby models a rear spoiler that changes how a cover sits. Many are daily drivers, so breathability matters if the cover stays on through wet weeks.

Shop by year: 2005 · 2006 · 2007 · 2008 · 2009 · 2010 · 2011 · 2012 · 2013 · 2014

Sixth generation, S550 (2015 to 2023)

Independent rear suspension, a lower and wider stance, and the first Mustang sold globally. Sharper body creases mean any fabric movement concentrates on small areas, so fit and anchoring matter more than on the softer older shapes.

Shop by year: 2015 · 2016 · 2017 · 2018 · 2019 · 2020 · 2021 · 2022 · 2023

Seventh generation, S650 (2024 onward)

The current car, with more aggressive aero and widespread carbon-fiber options on the higher trims. Exposed carbon should be covered indoors rather than left under a cover outdoors for months.

Every 1994 to 2027 Mustang cover we sell is custom fit

Worth stating plainly, because "custom fit" gets used loosely. For Mustangs from 1994 through 2027, covering the SN95, New Edge, S197, S550 and S650 cars, we sell only custom-fit covers. Nothing universal, nothing semi-custom.

A custom-fit cover is cut from a pattern made for one specific body: your model year, your body style, and the variant where it has its own shape. The panels are shaped and sewn to follow the car's real contours rather than draped over an approximate outline. That means it fits like a glove, with sewn-in mirror pockets the mirrors sit into instead of the fabric stretching across them.

Why it matters on a Mustang specifically:

  • Nothing moves. A glove fit has no slack, and slack is what lets fabric shift in wind and mark the clear coat, concentrated on the sharp creases the S550 and S650 are full of.
  • Water runs off instead of pooling. The cover follows the fastback roofline and the big flat rear deck rather than sagging into a puddle over it.
  • Spoilers and wings are accounted for. GT and Shelby cars carry rear aero, and the pattern clears it instead of stretching over it.
  • The mirrors are covered, not tented. Mirror pockets remove the tension points where a universal cover strains and wears through first.
  • It reaches the rockers. The lower bodywork stays protected, which is where a too-short cover leaves paint exposed.

The trade-off is that you have to select the right car, so pick your exact year and body style, and choose the variant listing for Shelby, Boss, Bullitt, Dark Horse and Mach-E. It is all backed by our perfect-fit guarantee. Background on the categories in custom-fit vs. semi-custom vs. universal.

Or start from the Mustang model page and pick your year and body style.

Shelby, Boss, Bullitt and Other Variants

Fifteen Mustang variants are listed separately in our fitment data, because a wing, a wider body or different bumper work changes the pattern. If your car is one of these, choose the variant rather than the base Mustang listing.

Mustang GT (1982 onward)

The longest-running variant after the base car, spanning the Fox body through today. Hatchback, coupe and convertible depending on era. Later GTs often carry a rear spoiler, so check the body style.

Mustang Shelby GT500 (1966 onward)

From the original 1967 and 1968 big-block cars through the 2007 to 2014 supercharged run and the 2020 onward S550 car. The modern GT500 is wider than a standard Mustang and usually wears a tall rear wing, so the variant pattern matters.

Mustang Shelby GT350 (1964 onward)

The original mid-1960s fastbacks and the 2015 to 2020 flat-plane-crank car. Two very different shapes under one name, which is why the pattern is year-specific.

Mustang Shelby GT (2007 to 2009)

The Shelby GT and GT/SC of the S197 era, coupe and convertible.

Mustang Boss 302 (1968 onward)

The 1969 to 1970 originals and the 2012 to 2013 revival. Fastback for the classics, coupe for the modern cars.

Mustang Boss 429 (1968 to 1971)

Fewer than 1,400 built, with the widened shock towers needed to fit the semi-hemi engine. Among the most valuable Mustangs there are, and effectively always an indoor-cover car.

Mustang Boss 351 (1970 to 1973)

The 1971 Boss 351 fastback and its immediate siblings, built on the larger early-seventies body.

Mustang Bullitt (2007 onward)

The 2008 to 2009 and 2019 to 2020 special editions. Spoiler-delete on most Bullitts, which actually makes the standard coupe pattern a clean fit.

Mustang Dark Horse (2024 onward)

The current track-focused S650 variant, with unique aero and available carbon-fiber pieces. Keep long-term covering indoors if yours has exposed carbon.

Mustang SVT Cobra (1993 to 2005)

The SVT cars across the late Fox, SN95 and New Edge eras, including the 2003 to 2004 Terminator. Coupe and convertible.

Mustang Cobra (1981)

A single model year on its own, the early Fox-body Cobra hatchback.

Mustang GT350 (1984)

The 20th Anniversary GT350, convertible and hatchback, listed separately from the Shelby cars.

Mustang Mach-E (2021 onward)

The only Mustang here that is not a coupe. The Mach-E is an electric four-door crossover, so it takes an SUV-shaped cover, not a Mustang one. If yours is a Mach-E, use this listing rather than any other Mustang pattern.

Every Protection Grade, Explained

Supreme Shield HD: maximum outdoor protection

Marine-grade 300D oxford polyester, 100% waterproof and breathable, with air vents that let pressure equalize instead of the cover ballooning in wind. Soft inner lining, lifetime warranty. The answer for a Mustang that lives outside in snow country, coastal salt, or relentless sun.

Gold Shield 5L: all-weather, softest outdoor option

Five bonded layers, highly water-resistant, breathable, with a cotton-soft inner face. The best balance for a car that alternates between garage and driveway. Lifetime warranty.

Silver Shield 3L: everyday value

Three bonded layers with a breathable micro-porous film. Water-resistant, light enough to install single-handed, rated indoor or outdoor in ordinary conditions. Five-year warranty.

Black Satin BL: the show-car indoor cover

Tightly woven satin with an ultra-soft inner face. Slides on and off without dragging, which matters on ceramic coatings and freshly corrected paint. Lifetime warranty.

Bronze Shield 2L: indoor basics

Two-layer indoor protection against dust and light contact. Three-year warranty.

Indoor Inflatable Bubble: sealed storage

A clear enclosure with a filtered fan circulating dry air, and nothing touching the paint. For long-term collector storage. Two-year warranty.

Why Fit Beats Fabric

A well-fitted mid-grade cover protects better than a loose top-grade one. Slack fabric moves in wind, and moving fabric carrying dust behaves like a very fine polish against the clear coat, concentrated on mirror caps, spoiler edges and body creases.

Fit also decides whether water runs off or pools. A cover cut for a fastback roofline sheds water; a generic cover forms puddles on the rear deck, and standing water finds seams. This is also why fastback, coupe, hatchback and convertible are patterned separately rather than lumped together. More in custom-fit vs. semi-custom vs. universal, and every cover carries our perfect-fit guarantee.

Mistakes That Damage Mustang Paint

  1. Covering a dirty car. Grit between fabric and clear coat is an abrasive. Wash first, every time.
  2. Covering a wet car. Trapped water causes spotting and haze. Let it dry first.
  3. Covering a convertible with the top down or damp. Raise and latch it, and make sure the fabric is dry.
  4. Using the base pattern on a winged Shelby. Choose the variant so the cover clears the wing instead of stretching over it.
  5. Using a tarp. No breathability and an abrasive surface. Never a substitute.
  6. Covering a hot car. Let the exhaust and tailpipes cool first.
  7. Skipping the straps. Use the underbody straps and add wind straps in exposed spots.

Winter and Long-Term Storage

  1. Wash and dry completely, including underneath if the car has seen road salt.
  2. Wax or seal the paint. That is the layer the cover protects.
  3. Let fresh wax cure fully before covering.
  4. Use a breathable cover: Black Satin BL indoors, Gold Shield 5L or Supreme Shield HD if the car sits outside or in an unheated garage.
  5. Check monthly. Lift a corner, look for condensation, and let the car breathe for an hour.

Questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best car cover for a Ford Mustang?

For a garaged Mustang, Black Satin BL is the usual choice, a soft satin indoor cover that keeps dust off without dragging on the paint. For outdoor storage, Gold Shield 5L covers most climates and Supreme Shield HD is the 100% waterproof, breathable option for harsh year-round exposure.

Do Shelby and Boss Mustangs need a different cover?

Yes, and they are listed separately. Wider bodies and tall rear wings change the pattern, so select the Shelby GT500, GT350, Boss or Dark Horse listing rather than the base Mustang, and the cover will clear the aero instead of stretching over it.

Is a Mustang Mach-E cover the same as a Mustang cover?

No. The Mach-E is a four-door electric crossover, not a coupe, so it takes an SUV-shaped cover. Use the Mustang Mach-E listing rather than any coupe pattern.

Can I cover a Mustang convertible?

Yes. Raise and latch the top first, and make sure the fabric roof is completely dry. A breathable cover is important on convertibles, because anything trapped against a damp soft top invites mildew.

Will a cover scratch my Mustang's paint?

A clean, well-fitted cover with a soft inner lining will not. Scratching happens when the car is dirty underneath, or a loose cover moves in wind and drags trapped grit across the clear coat. Wash first and cinch the underbody straps.

Do you make covers for 1960s Mustang fastbacks?

Yes. Every Mustang model year from 1964 onward has covers patterned for it, and the fastback is patterned separately from the coupe because the roofline is completely different.
