What sun actually does to a parked car
UV radiation breaks the chemical bonds in the polymers that make up your paint system. It works from the outside in, and it does not stop at the paint.
Clear coat, first and worst
Clear coat is the sacrificial layer, and it is the layer UV attacks. The failure sequence is predictable: gloss dulls, then the surface goes chalky as oxidation sets in, then the clear coat delaminates and starts flaking off in patches. Once it reaches flaking, the only fix is a repaint of the affected panel. Horizontal surfaces go first because they take the most direct radiation, which is why a sun-damaged car almost always has a ruined roof and hood while the doors still look presentable.
Pigment fade
Under the clear coat, UV bleaches the pigment itself. Reds and blacks show it soonest because their pigments are the least UV-stable, which is why so many older red cars look pink on the roof. Metallic and pearl finishes lose the depth that made them worth paying for.
The interior bakes
Cabin temperatures pass 160°F on a 95°F day, and the dash top can reach far higher because it sits directly under glass. That heat plus UV cracks dashboards, hardens and splits leather, warps trim panels and fades upholstery. Interior damage is often the more expensive half of sun damage, and it is entirely caused by parking in the open.
Rubber, plastic and glass
Door and window seals dry out, shrink and crack, which is how wind noise and water leaks start. Plastic trim goes grey and chalky. Headlight lenses yellow and cloud, costing you both light output and an inspection pass in some states. Wiper blades harden. None of it is dramatic on any given day, and all of it is cumulative.
How hot a parked car really gets
The gap between air temperature and what your car experiences is larger than most people assume. On a 90°F day in direct sun, a dark exterior panel can reach 180°F or more, the dash top can exceed 190°F, and the cabin stabilizes somewhere between 130°F and 160°F within about an hour. Cracking a window barely moves those numbers.
A multi-layer cover attacks the problem two ways at once. It reflects a large share of the radiation before it ever reaches the paint, and the bonded layers act as insulation against what does get through. The practical result is dramatically lower panel and cabin temperatures, and every hour the car spends covered is an hour the damage clock is stopped.
What to look for in a sun cover
- A UV inhibitor treatment in the outer layer, so radiation is reflected rather than absorbed. Without it, a cover heats up and simply transfers that heat downward.
- Multiple bonded layers. Thickness is insulation. A two-layer cover blocks light; a five-layer cover blocks light and keeps the heat off.
- Breathability. This matters more in heat than in any other condition. A non-breathable cover in full sun traps hot, humid air against the paint, which is worse for the finish than the sun was.

Five mistakes that cost you paint
- Using a plastic tarp or non-breathable cover. It traps heat and moisture and does more damage than leaving the car uncovered.

- Putting the cover on a hot car. Let the panels cool. Fabric against 180°F paint, then wind moving it around, is exactly how you get marring.

Can I put a cover on a hot car straight after driving?

Does a windshield sunshade do the same job?
