Cadillac Eldorado is one of the most iconic luxury cars American automotive industry ever produced. Eldorado was in production between 1953 and 2002: making it one of the longest continued models. Eldorado was a fierce competitor of Lincoln Marks series, Oldsmobile Tornado, Buick Riviera and Chrysler Imperial Coupe.
For most of Eldorado’s life it was either the top or near top line of Cadillac. Most prized of all Eldorados were the original 1953 convertible and the Eldorado Brougham models between 1957 and 1960. There was as many as ten generations of Cadillac Eldorado spread over a span of 50 years.
The name Eldorado is derived from the Spanish word – gold, or the lost mythical city of gold in South America. One of the longest continued models without a break – Cadillac Eldorado is a true testament of luxury evolution in American automotive industry. Eldorado often set standards of luxury vehicle of its time and that speaks volume of how iconic this vehicle is.
The 1953 Model:
Assembled in Detroit, Michigan, the two-door convertible is probably the most prized classic car of present day. Even though it didn't do very well when it came out first. Comprised 0.5% of Cadillac’s sales in 1953.
Cadillac had three more generations of Eldorado between 1954 and 1964. The first generation exterior design was overhauled and more concentration was put in luxury features. These Eldorados were also available in several body types, including but not limited to: two-door convertible, two-door hardtop, and four-door hardtop.
Three more generations of Eldorados were manufactured and sold between 1965 and 1978. Available in coupe and convertible models, later generations had standard V-8 engines, which was another breakthrough for American automotive industry.
Last Generation of Eldorado (1992-2002):
The last generation of Eldorado ran for almost ten years. 2002 marked the 50th anniversary of Cadillac Eldorado and GM announced this 50th anniversary model would be the last Eldorado and that ended the era of this remarkable line.
